The center of attention

Tools of tradition

Overland Park, KS, reader Shelley Bogseth sent in this wonderful flea market find and set the tone for this month’s subject: centerpieces. The toolbox immediately grabbed my attention for two reasons: it’s classic and easy! Shelley writes: “One weekend a month, Good JuJu opens its doors in downtown KCMO and a world of vintage possibility is yours.  I found this vintage toolbox in a corner and knew it belonged in my home.” To make this flea market find fabulous, she filled it with vegetables from her garden and decorative branches from Hobby Lobby. Another plus: She can update the centerpiece according to the seasons.

Nifty nutcracker

There’s nothing nicer than gathering around the table with loved ones to share conversation, sweet treats and memories. This nutcracker stocking hanger was too much fun to be left out of the conversation, so I built a centerpiece around it that was festive and fun. I used a hot glue gun to attach holiday bulbs to a wheel rim I found at a thrift store; additional bulbs were strung around the rim with wire. Then, I secured the wreath to the frame of an old lamp and glued the nutcracker to the center of the lamp. I placed pinecones around it to add aroma.

Fishbowl flair

A vintage fishbowl gives enough transparency for visitors to not feel blocked during conversation. I used holiday bulbs to fill the vase and fishbowl as well as pinecones to provide that wonderful scent of the holiday season. Festive branches set the mood: for a more formal affair, the lavish tree-like quality looks modern and fresh; for more intimate entertaining, place branches in a wreath shape underneath the bowl and vase.
