Discover Mid-America — November 2009

Two into one

Stock prices are up. More people are out of work. And the sun will come up tomorrow. Two out of the three of those facts will change in time. Whether it matters depends if you own stock, have a job or both. Meanwhile … those of us who run small businesses — particularly publishing — adapt.

Though it has been noted that I sometimes make changes to our business in an approach sorta like throwing spaghetti against the wall to see if it sticks, I prefer to consider myself as one less spontaneous in my business decisions — I weigh the spaghetti first in order to calculate the ratio of velocity to wall space. If you’re going to waste spaghetti, it better stick.

I did similar Einsteinian calculations in deciding to combine our upcoming January and February issues into one. But first Al (Hedrick) — trusty ad rep that he is — and I made a few calls to some advertisers. The responses ranged from “sounds okay” to “whatever.”

Okay, hardly a resounding affirmation or admonition. But I dressed it up in my mind as a good business practice of inclusion and metaphorically decided the spaghetti stuck.

January and February 2010 will be combined into one issue. The ad and editorial copy deadline is Dec. 14. We will also be offering discounts to current advertisers if they want to increase the size of their ad for that combined issue. We plan on restocking the issue in key locations and upon request. And, our new advertising vehicle of having all print ads appear on our web site without an extra cost will, of course, continue. Yet remember, custom-created online ads are a good supplement to print ads and timely considering we offer weekly rates for online ads.

Granted, we’re saving money in printing and shipping by combining issues. I feel it’s a necessary step during the slowest period in the retail antique trade. Yet, we guarantee the impact of advertising with Discover Mid-America remains as strong as ever.

A correction is necessary in our October 2009 Mid-America News story on The Ridge in Shawnee, KS. I stated, “…plans for the space include a lending library for 78 records.” The Ridge will have a listening library available for customers. Call 913-268-7979 for more information.
