Antique Home Study School turns 40

(l) Current AIA Director Charles Green and Founder Peter Green.

The Destin-based Asheford Institute of Antiques, the distance-learning program on antiques and collectibles, recently hit forty years in business. It marks a milestone in antique education as the longest running institute of its kind.

Founder Peter Green began the school at a time when some would question the need for antique education. “I can remember when antique stores were hard to find. Now, you can click a button and find virtually anything instantly,” said Green.

Day-to-day operations were taken over by Green’s son, Charles, in the 1980s. He views the antique market as beginning an upswing again.

“There’s been a tremendous shift in antiques,” he said. “It’s cyclical; it was down for a while but it’s really gaining strength again.”

Plans are afoot for both Charles and Peter to be part of a traveling road show this year of commemorate the 40th anniversary.

“We really want to give something back to our students and those interested in antiques,” said Peter Green. “It’s our way of saying ‘thanks.’”

For more information on the institute, call 850-244-0632 or visit www.asheford.com.
